Building credit responsibly
Understanding credit is a superpower for your financial future! Discover what credit means, how it impacts your life, and how to build a strong credit foundation.

What is credit and why does it matter?
Credit is like a financial trust score. When you borrow money, whether it's for a car, a home, or even a cell phone plan, lenders check your credit to see how reliable you are at paying back what you owe. A good credit score can open doors to better interest rates and more opportunities, while a low score can make things much harder. Learning about credit now helps you make smart choices later.
There are three major credit reporting agencies in the U.S that collect financial information from lenders and other sources and compile it into credit reports. These reports include details such as payment history, account balances, account status, and public records. The credit reporting agencies are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Your credit score: Your financial report card
A credit score is a three-digit number that tells lenders how likely you are to repay borrowed money. The higher your score, the better! This score impacts everything from getting a loan to renting an apartment. It's crucial to understand how your actions, like paying bills on time, can make your score go up, and how missed payments or high debt can cause it to decrease. Monitoring your credit helps you stay in control and protect against credit fraud and abuse.
Credit scores range are categorized as poor, fair, good or excellent. Learn more about credit score range and impact on future borrowings. My credit journey: A real-life lesson
My family and I emigrated from Pakistan when I was 7 years old. My first meal was a Big Mac and vanilla milkshake. I loved this new country! We did not have a lot of money and settled in Texas close to relatives. We learned English, assimilated, and ate at McDonald’s on the regular. My mom became a Registered Nurse. My dad opened a Pakistani restaurant, the immigrant dream! Unfortunately, the restaurant failed because of his lack of financial management knowledge. When I was in my first semester of community college, my dad declared bankruptcy and left for Pakistan, leaving my mom and three girls behind. He also left us with terrible credit because he financed items for the restaurant under our credit, without our knowledge, and did not pay on the loans. We received a call from the bank a week after and were shocked to learn we owed so much money on things we did not buy! This was the first time I heard about credit score, credit reporting agencies, fraud, and how to file a dispute.
